( 32 ) The Fox and the Grapes

One hot summer's day a Fox was strolling through

an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just

ripening on a vine which had been trained over a

lofty branch.

'Just the thing to quench my thirst,' quote he.

Drawing back a few paces, he took a run and a

jump, and just missed the bunch.

Turning round again with a One, Two, Three, he

jumped up, but with no greater success.

Again and again he tried after the tempting

morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked

away with his nose in the air, saying: 'I am sure

they are sour.'

“It is easy to despise what you cannot get.”

สุนัขจิ้งจอกกับผลองุ่น

วันหนึ่งในช่วงฤดูร้อน ขณะที่สุนัขจิ้งจอกกำลังเดิน

เล่นเตร่ผ่านเข้าไปยังสวนผลไม้ จนกระทั่งมาถึง

พวงองุ่นช่อหนึ่งเพิ่งสุกเต็มที่ ซึ่งอยู่สูงตระง่าน

“มันจะช่วยดับกระหายของข้าได้” สุนัขจิ้งจอกกล่าว

มันถอยหลังไป 2-3 ก้าวแล้ววิ่งกลับมา และกระโดด

แต่มันก็พลาด ไม่สามารถเก็บองุ่นช่อนั้นได้

มันทำเช่นเดิมอีกแต่ก็ยังไม่สำเร็จ

ครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่าที่มันพยายามอยู่เช่นนั้นหลังจากที่

ได้เห็นอาหารล่อใจชิ้นนั้น แต่สุดท้ายมันก็ต้องยอม

แพ้ และเดินกลับออกมา พร้อมเอ๋ยออกมาว่า “ฉัน

มั่นใจว่ามันต้องเป็นองุ่นเปรี้ยวแน่ ๆ ”

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

มันเป็นเรื่องง่ายที่จะเหยียดหยามในสิ่งที่ไม่สามารถที่จะได้มา แต่อย่าไปกล่าวร้ายดังเช่นนิสัยคนพาล
