( 16 ) The Wind and The Sun

 

One day the wind and the sun were disputing
 
which was the stronger.

Suddenly they saw a traveler coming down the
 
road, and the sun said:

“I see a way to decide our dispute. Whichever of
 
us can cause that traveler to take off his cloak shall
 
be regarded as the stronger. You begin.”

So the sun got behind a cloud. And the wind
 
began to blow as hard as it could upon the
 
traveler.

But the harder he blew the more closely did the
 
traveler wrap his cloak round him, till at last the
 
wind had to give in despair.

Then the sun came out and shone in all his glory
 
upon the traveler, who soon found it too hot to
 
walk with his cloak on.

"Now, he must take off his trousers," said the Sun.
 
When he laid dows all his things, the man ran into
 
the ditch by the roadside. "Both of us lost," the
 
Wind said with relief. "I must say good-bye," said
 
the Wind and blew away.


“ Kindness affects more than severity.”
 

 

 

ลมกับดวงอาทิตย์

วันหนึ่งลมกับดวงอาทิตย์โต้เถียงกันว่าใครมีกำลัง
 
มากกว่ากัน
 

ทันใดนั้นพวกเขาก็เห็นคนเดินทางคนหนึ่งกำลังเดิน
 
มาตามถนน แล้วดวงอาทิตย์ก็พูดขึ้นว่า

“ข้าพบวิธีีที่จะตัดสินการโต้เถียงของเราแล้ว ไม่ว่า
 
ใครก็ตามที่สามารถทำให้คนเดินทางผู้นั้นถอดเสื้อ
 
คลุมได้ จะถูกนับว่าเป็นผู้ที่แข็งแรงกว่า ท่านเริ่ม
 
ก่อนน่ะ”

ดังนั้นดวงอาทิตย์จึงหลบไปอยู่หลังก้อนเมฆ แล้ว
 
ลมก็เริ่มพัดคนเดินทางแรงที่สุดเท่าที่จะสามารถทำ
 
ได้
 

แต่ยิ่งลมพัดแรงเท่าไรคนเดินทางก็ยิ่งคลุมร่างกาย
 
มิดชิดมากขึ้นเท่านั้น จนกระทั่งในที่สุดลมก็หมด
 
หวัง
 

จากนั้นดวงอาทิตย์ก็ออกมาและส่องแสงสว่างเต็ม
 
กำลังไปยังคนเดินทางผู้นั้น ไม่นานเขาก็เริ่มรู้สึก
 
ร้อนเกินกว่าจะเดินต่อไปพร้อมกับถอดเสื้อคลุมออก
 
ด้วย

พอวางสิ่งของลงหมดแล้ว ชายผู้นั้นก็วิ่งลงไปแช่ใน


คูน้ำข้างทาง
 
"เราต่างก็แพ้เหมือนๆ กัน" ลมพูดอย่างโล่งอก "


ข้าเห็นที ต้องลาไปก่อนล่ะ แล้วลมก็พัดผ่านไป

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

“ความอ่อนโยนได้ผลกว่าความรุนแรง”
